I realised yesterday, clear as the air, how much we have equated love with sacrifice.

Chris was having a rough day and mentioned, almost in passing, that he was craving a Magnum ice cream. Later, while he was working and the kids were playing, I decided to nip to the shop at the end of the street and get him some.

Except the shop was closed. So I kept walking. Because I was only going for a minute, I had no sunglasses, no headphones, and the wrong shoes. In forty-degree heat.

It was a miserable walk. I sweated, I swore, and eventually I found another shop that was open. When I got home, Chris was genuinely touched. “You, especially you, in this heat? That means a lot.”

And then I saw it.

That it was wrong.
